of of of The North Jersey Herald News Friday, April 3, 1992 OBITUARIES Mary A. Peto, 87, beautician, artist DONALD DIIORIO The Herald News CLIFTON Mary A. Peto, a former beauty salon owner and artist, died Wednesday. She was 87. Born and raised on a truck farm in Astoria, Long Island, she moved to Clifton at the age of.19.

After a two-year apprenticeship at a local beauty salon, she opened Mary's Beauty Salon in Pompton Lakes, which she operated for 25 years before retiring. Mrs. Peto had a talent for crafts and decorated her home with her works, especially ceramics, eggery and bead work. "She had golden hands. She worked at it 20 hours a day," said her husband, Henry Peto.

She learned her crafts attending night classes at Clifton High School and at an old arts and crafts school located behind the firehouse on Broad street in Clifton, he said. Mrs. Peto's works included beaded flowers which consisted of tiny beads strung along wire and shaped into petals, stems and buds. She also was an enthusiast of eggery, a process which involves draining eggs and fashioning the shell into sculpture. Her husband said one of her most outstanding works was "Cinderella and her Coach." In this piece, an ostrich egg was used to make the coach and had movable doors.

Though worth more than $3,000, she never tried selling it or any of her other works, her husband said. "She would never sell, she'd only give them to people who would appreciate them," he said. "The words I would use (to describe her) are caring, loving and generous," said her son, H. Richard Peto of San Antonio, Texas. "She was industrious.
