Litter-Robot 3 Cat Sensor - Installation Guide (2024)

WARNING:If you've determined through the troubleshooting process that you need a new cat sensor, please understand that the cat sensor is a complex system. The installation process, sensor tolerance, and calibration weight will impact its sensitivity. For these reasons, we highly recommend a base replacement or an in-house repair by Whisker where your Litter-Robot will undergo thorough testing of the cat sensor after repair. If you'd like to continue with the cat sensor installation, follow the steps below.

Litter-Robot 3 is equipped with a cat sensor, a weight-sensitive switch that detects when a cat enters and exits the globe. For the cat sensor to accurately detect your cat, your cat must weigh at least 5 lbs, or 2.3 kg, and the litter in the globe must be just below the raised fill line. Litter-Robot must be placed on firm, level flooring; avoid soft, uneven, or unstable surfaces.

You will need:

  • 1/4 inch hex socket with ratchet
  • Standard screwdriver
  • Masking tape
  • 10 lbs (or 4.5 kg) of cat litter
  • Cat sensor replacement kit

Remove old cat sensor

  1. Locate the cat sensor “foot” under the base, secured by a bolt.

  2. Look inside the base: In the back of the base, the cat sensor module is located under the metal sensor cover, secured by a nut attached to a bolt.

Note: The cat sensor foot is spring-loaded. Ensure that you don’t lose track of any parts as you remove the nut and bolt.

  3. While applying downward pressure into the base through either the waste port or drawer, use a 1/4 inch hex socket with ratchet to remove the 1/4 inch nut and bolt that hold the cat sensor foot to the unit.

  4. Carefully release pressure from the base and remove the cat sensor foot and its bolt from the bottom of the base.

Install new cat sensor

  1. Plug in the new cat sensor and without bending it, gently slide it under the plastic tab. Again, use a screwdriver to assist you in lifting the plastic tab if needed.

  4. Use masking tape to hold the bolt in place inside the foot: Use one piece to create a small ball of tape to insert into the hole, and another piece of tape to keep the ball in place.

    1. Replace the cat sensor foot and bolt on the bottom of the base.

  5. Apply pressure on the base to ensure the bolt is coming out of the hole.

  6. Replace the metal sensor cover on top of the cat sensor.

  7. Use your fingers to tighten the nut on the bolt, then tighten the nut with the 1/4 inch hex socket on your ratchet.

  8. While applying downward pressure into the base to compress the spring, you'll want to tighten the nut until there is no longer any movement in the metal sensor cover. Be careful not to overtighten the bolt.

The sensor should be firmly fastened, but allow for a slight wiggle.

  9. Remove the tape from the cat sensor foot.

Successful: Once the initial clean cycle is complete, the unit should return to the home position displaying a blue “ready light” status. Proceed to the next section to calibrate the cat sensor.

Unsuccessful: If the globe is unable to complete the cycle, displaying a solid red or flashing red light, remove some litter from the globe and press the Reset button to return the globe to the home position.

Calibrate cat sensor

  1. Add approximately 10 lbs, or 4.5 kg, of cat litter to the globe. We recommend using standard-weight clay-clumping litter. This weight will be used to calibrate your unit to the new cat sensor.

    1. If you are using a standard clay-clumping litter, fill the litter just below the raised fill line. If you are using a heavier litter, fill to about halfway from the fill line.

  2. Now press and hold the Empty andCyclebuttons for 3 seconds. This will calibrate the new cat censor.

  3. Calibration is confirmed by the red flashing Timing LED.

  4. Wait 30 seconds, then press the Reset button.

To ensure the accuracy and reliability of the cat sensor, always press the Reset button after making any changes that will affect the weight of the unit, including emptying the waste drawer, adding or removing litter from the globe, or cleaning or moving the unit. This will recalibrate the weight sensor and circuit board to reflect the changed weight.
  5. Your unit should display a solid blue light indicating it is ready for use.
