How to pass a cat adoption interview? ›

Be honest in your answers and don't lie about anything that you're asked. It's tempting to write down what you think the rescue wants to hear, but this could lead to you matching with a cat or dog who won't fit well in your home environment.

Some red flags when adopting a cat from an animal shelter would be if they have a poor track record of adoption or repeat instances of adoption returns. While this doesn't mean that they are “bad,” you might want to ask why they have this in their history.

While there are some cats that automatically adjust to a new home as soon as they get there, most do not. The general rule when adopting any animal is the rule of 3-3-3: three days to decompress, three weeks to learn your routine and three months to start to feel at home.

What's the difference between ASPCA and SPCa? ›

The ASPCA is often confused as the “umbrella” organization for all SPCA's, however this is not the case. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a stand alone, national organization, that works in, and on behalf of, any/all target states that may be problematic at any given time.

Critics have accused the ASPCA of fundraising at the expense of local animal welfare organizations. In 2011, local SCPAs in California filed a complaint with the state attorney general's office, alleging the ASPCA engages in unfair and deceptive fundraising practices that hurt local SPCAs.

Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.4 million are cats. Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized (1.4 million cats). Approximately 2.7 million shelter animals are adopted each year (1.3 million cats).

Let the potential adopter speak and then probe for more information – who, what, when, where, why (proper order) questions are best. Avoid asking only yes/no questions—ask probing questions and have the adopter tell their story: Ask about what cats they have owned over the years and what happened to them, etc.

Beyond having a formal pet agreement as part of your leasing process, the key to making sure a pet will be successful in your community is conducting a pet interview. This means meeting the pet in person so you can confirm he or she is friendly and well-behaved.

Include how you know the person you are writing the reference letter for and how long you have known them. If you have witnessed the individual or couple's involvement with children, either your children or others, tell how they interact and what qualities they have that would make them good parents.
