It was a record-setting night for Brady Albro as the Chapin High offense looked in midseason form Friday night.
The Chapin senior quarterback threw for 370 yards and had four total touchdowns as the Eagles defeated A.C. Flora, 62-21, at Cecil Woolbright Stadium.
Albro became the school’s all-time leader in TD passes (48), breaking the mark of 46 set by Logan Bailey. He also passed Roger Pedroni’s school record for career passing yards. Pedroni had 5,466, but Albro went way past that Friday.
“I didn’t know I was close to them,” Albro said of the records. “Shout out to my offensive line. They gave me all the time in the world to pick them apart. ... All the receivers made great plays. I am just glad we executed and we won.”
The game was close, with Chapin up 28-21, after A.C. Flora QB Roper Wentzky scrambled and hit Javarie Dubose for a touchdown pass with 49 seconds in the second quarter.
Instead of playing it safe and running out the clock before halftime, Chapin coach Ryan Cole and offensive coordinator Jody Haltiwanger got aggressive and it paid off.
Albro hit receiver Stone Furrey on a 50-yard touchdown pass with 18 seconds left in the second quarter to make it 35-21.
“I think we had a pretty good look and coach Haltiwanger thought we had a good look against their defense, and we decided to go ahead and take a shot,” Cole said. “It worked out well.”
From there, the route was on.
Chapin scored on its first three possessions in the third quarter to take a 55-21 lead. Albro had a TD pass to Khalen Bostick and also ran in a score during that stretch. Anthony Turnbow also had a TD run.
Running back Colione Martin rushed for more than 100 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles. Chapin’s 62 points were the most it scored in a game since the second game of last year against Mid-Carolina.
The start of the game was delayed 30 minutes because of heat.
Eau Claire 34, Bethune-Bowman 18
The Shamrocks jumped out to a 20-0 lead on their way to ending the state’s longest current losing streak.
The win snapped Eau Claire’s 35-game losing streak. The Shamrocks hadn’t won a game since beating Columbia, 20-19, on Nov. 1, 2019.
Dutch Fork 24, Spartanburg 7
Quarterback Ethan Offing threw three touchdown passes and Boykin Bickley went over 100 yards receiving in Dutch Fork’s season-opening win.
Offing was 24-of-35 passing for 228 yards. Bickley had eight catches for 120 yards and two scores. KJ Smith also had a TD catch.
Irmo 35, Byrnes 27
Quarterback AJ Brand threw for more than 300 yards and four touchdowns and also ran in a score in Irmo’s second win of the season.
Donovan Murph had more than 150 yards receiving to lead Irmo.
Columbia 35, Pelion 22
Malachi Butler had three touchdowns as the Capitals moved to 2-0 for the first time since 2007.
Butler had two TD runs and also returned a punt for a score for Columbia. Darius Cunningham added a TD pass to Tony Drummond and Rondrecus Peterson also had a TD run for the Caps.
Sumter 43, White Knoll 40 (2 OT)
Alex Krivejko hit a 32-yard field goal in the second overtime to give the Gameco*cks a come-from-behind win in a top-10 matchup in Class 5A. Sumter trailed 33-13 at halftime.
White Knoll had a chance to win it in regulation and Tymaries Thompson-Durant picked off Landon Sharpe with less than four seconds left.
In the first overtime, John Peeples scored to give Sumter a 40-33 lead. Sharpe answered on an 8-yard run to tie it at 40.
White Knoll got the ball first in the second overtime but Sumter’s Jeremiah Burson came up with the interception. Krivejko then hit the game-winning FG.
Lexington 20, North Augusta 19
The Wildcats stopped North Augusta on fourth-and-goal with 3.9 seconds left to move to 2-0.
Brennan Carter threw a TD pass and ran for one. Matthew McAuley also had a TD run.
Richland Northeast 34, Crestwood 32
Will Wilson hit Blake Betette on a 9-yard TD pass with 20 seconds left as RNE moved to 2-0 on the year.
Wilson finished with 355 yards passing and 205 yards rushing for the Cavs.
Northwestern 45, Ridge View 27
Finley Polk threw six touchdowns as the Trojans defeated the Blazers.
Polk, a Gardner-Webb commitment, was 18-of-29 passing and also rushed for 56 yards in the win. Jayden Nichols caught nine passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns. Kameron Vance had four catches for 107 yards and three touchdowns.
Ridge View quarterback Tre Howard was 25-of-35 for 329 yards and two touchdowns. Darius Carter led the Blazers (1-1) with nine catches for 148 yards and a TD. Khristian Jackson had four catches for 98 yards and two scores.
Spencer Bobian ran for a pair of scores for RV.
River Bluff 41, Brookland-Cayce 21
Hayden Myers and Jacob Pinkney each rushed for two touchdowns as the Gators moved to 2-0 on the season.
Myers finished with 130 yards on the ground. Quarterback Parker Murray threw a TD pass to Aaron Griffin.
Amarii King rushed for 121 yards to lead B-C.
Baylor (Tenn.) 42, Gray Collegiate 7
Quarterback Briggs Cherry threw four touchdown passes as Baylor defeated the War Eagles.

The Indians bounced back from a season-opening loss in a game that was called in the second half because of bad weather.

Quarterback Wyatt Thompson had three touchdowns as the Bulldogs bounced back from an opening loss to defeat their Kershaw County rivals.

Quarterback Andrew Turner threw for 315 yards and five touchdowns as Hammond moved to 2-0 on the season.
LSU commitment Mike Tyler had five catches for 129 yards and two touchdowns. Daylin Haltiwanger caught a pair of touchdowns.

Quarterback Johnny Collins threw for 302 yards and three touchdowns in the Bengals’ second win of the year.
Ben Hendrix caught two touchdown passes and Kanye Reed went over 100 yards receiving. Carter Coleman also had a TD catch.

The Diamond Hornets jumped out to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter to defeat the Vikings.
