CeeDee Lamb wild trade proposal draws cheers, jeers from Chiefs Kingdom (2024)

In one sense, every NFL team would love the chance to add Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Ceedee Lamb to its roster. In another, very few teams could or would given the parameters involved.

If that sounds confusing or obvious, we likely jumped into the deep end on you, but Ceedee Lamb trade proposals turned into a real debate point on social media for Chiefs fans on Thursday because of a trade proposal floated on X (formerly Twitter) by FanDuel that basically set everyone on fire one way or the other.

Here's the opening salvo:

Now, to bring you up to speed as to why we're. not discussing, say, Brandon Aiyuk of the San Francisco of the 49ers instead, it's because Lamb's own situation with the Cowboys is feeling tenuous. He wants a long-term contract extension to which Cowboys owner Jerry Jones recently stated he's in no hurry to give. Art this point, Lamb simply posted this:

That's led to frustration, but we're not sure whether the situation will ever reach an impasse at which Dallas would actually feel compelled to trade away one of the five best wide receivers in the game. That said, some on social media were quick to point out that the Twitter banner photo of Lamb featured Marquise Brown—currently a receiver on the Chiefs and his former teammate at Oklahoma.

Until the Cowboys sort things out and give Lamb what he wants, such trade ideas are likely going to be pitched from time to time, but Kansas City Chiefs fans really went overboard in their responses to this—both in positive and negative directions.

Chiefs fans for the Lamb trade idea

For some fans, the premise is simple: pour gas on the fire. If you already have the best quarterback in the game, a legendary head coach, a Hall of Fame tight end, and an exciting new deep threat in Xavier Worthy, why not just kick in the door and put the team over the top by bringing in an elite young wide receiver who would make it feel impossible to defend against them.

Not only this but Travis Kelce is getting older, and Marquise Brown is only in K.C. on a one-year deal, someone like Lamb could carry the offense going forward—assuming a long-term deal.

Okay, that last paragraph was far more nuance than most fans were using. Mostly it was about an NFL GM treating his franchise like he's playing Madden.

Welcome to the real world.

The truth is that Lamb is a world-class wide receiver the Cowboys would be silly to ever trade, but the cost is so prohibitive in this deal that the idea should fall apart right there.

That's not to mention the fact that the Chiefs already traded away one of the game's best wide receivers—and the best WR in franchise history—when the market for him was going to get too high. Why trade for Lamb when he's only going to cost more than Tyreek Hill?

By the way, Rice is no slouch himself, a young man who set set franchise receiving records for a rookie with three more years of cost control remaining. Why would the Chiefs package their best young receiver and a serious financial bonus for a contractual albatross while giving away two more first-round picks in the process?

By the way, the Chiefs have won two Super Bowls in a row without one of the league's best wideeouts.

Back to the idea. We get it. It's fun. Lamb is potentially available, or at least there's a crack in the foundation, and teams would be silly not to kick the tires on the idea. And we also get why fans would love it. Lamb is a generational talent on a HOF trajectory. And isn't this what social media is for?
